Assessment of China's Market for Fuel Cells
A GCiS Limited Publication Study
Published August, 2009
China's fuel cell market is small relative to the amount exported and is growing by around 4% in 2009. The high cost of the products, which exclusively use proton exchange membrane technology and poor availability of hydrogen, are the major inhibitors in the market. Factors such as intellectual property security have dissuaded foreign companies from selling into the domestic market. Fuel cells are mostly used as showpieces and in academia, with one example of commercial use in China recorded: a public bus service in Beijing. The market is expected to develop over the next decade, where fuel cells will be used in stationary as well as portable applications.
